Jesse & Amanda

How long have you been together for?J: We've been married for 13 years, dating for 16 years.

. How did you meet? A: We first met when we were kids. When I was 10 and you were 12, and we were just a bunch of kids playing together, but he moved to Sydney when he was 17 and I was 15 and then we started dating pretty soon after that. He would come down every Christmas holidays. J: From Queensland. I did high school at Tambourine near the Gold Coast.

I'm confused, did you both grow up in Queensland and both move to Sydney?  J: No no no. A: Hahaha CUT. J: Take two? A: Should we start again? Hahaha can we edit? Ok so we first met when I was 10, Jesse was 12 and his dad use to teach at my dads college in Sydney. So he would come down every summer holidays from Queensland, and all the kids would play together. J: I was the cool kid. A: So we knew each other over the years, but he lived in Queensland, so we only saw each other in summer. But then when I was 15, and Jesse was 17 he moved down from Queensland (his family did) to Sydney and we started hanging out and started dating.

Did you both always like each other?A: Well it wasn't love at first sight when I was 10... because I was 10. How about you? I'm pretty sure it was love at first sight for you right? J: Haha what? Ummm haha yeah of course yeah... I don't think so, we were just young. A: We were just kids! J: We were too young. A: But when he moved to Sydney and we were older I was pretty sure I was going to marry him before we started dating. J: I think for me it was probably a little bit like, we were really close friends, and then after a little while I was like 'I really like this girl' so then it went from there. I didn't know I was going to marry her like the first time I saw her though, I'm not good at picking up on all those things.

Jackson (their son) gets out of bed, creeping down the hallway to tell us: Daddy Ruby bited my finger... (so cute)J: Hahaha A: Hahahah Ok thank you. Go back to bed now. (Jesse goes to take him back to bed).

J: So yes, where were we..love at first sight. Yeah so I wasn't good at picking up on signals but I knew I liked her so yeah, that's how it started.

Did you kiss before...J: Marriage?

Did you kiss before or after you were 'officially dating'? J: After. A: After. J: You better be careful what you say Amanda. A: Haha.

How many years did you date?J: We dated for 3 years. And it was pretty early on I knew we would eventually get married. It was probably only a month of dating I knew things were pretty serious, but we were pretty young.. A: I was 16, Jesse was 18. J: So it wasn't like we were going to get married straight away anyway. A: We still had 2 years until I was legal, so yeah. Haha. J: But I was a good boy, the parents loved me. A: They did, they did. My family definitely loved Jesse, did your family love me? J: Yes! Of course they did.

What is the best date you've ever been on together?A: That day in London maybe... J: Where we went to the diner? A: Yeah! J: That was cool. A: We went to a diner in Trafalgar Square, and it had a juke box and did old school milkshakes and so we sat in there... J: Old school songs or old school milkshakes? A: No both! Like the ones where you actually have ice cream and everything good in it and it's not all healthy.. J: Oh yeah yeah yeah. A: Yeah it was filling, fattening, full of sugar..so we did that, went to the movies and then went ice skating at Somerset House, at midnight, it was beautiful. J: Oh yes, I loved that. That was a good call.

What is a pet hate or bad habit your partner has? A: Jesse eats REALLY loudly at night time. Hahaha only at night time! When we are in bed he just eats really loudly. Hahaha. J: The worst thing is I can't think of anything about you. A: Yeah because I don't have any bad habits, it's fine.

What are you eating in bed by the way? J: I would have a couple of sandwiches, maybe some chips...some Peanut butter or Vegemite sandwiches and dried mango... A: Dried plums. J: Big glass of water hahaha and she just gets so annoyed. A: But it's only at night! He does have impeccable table manners in the day. J: I'm very polite most of the time. I'm really bad at this one though, I can't think of anything for Amanda. Next question, I can't think of anything.

What is one of the best things you've learnt from your partner? J: So this is a serious question? Ok Amanda is very consistent. So some people are very up and down and emotional and you don't know what you're going to get. But Amanda is super consistent, strong in terms of being a good mum, good wife, good leader. That's something I've definitely seen in her that I admire, whether or not I've learnt that and done that I don't know, but that's something I've seen in her that's a great thing. A: I would say about Jesse that he is very ... what's the right word? I'm trying to work out how to say it properly. You've very gracious with people. Like he will always have time for people, always believe the best in people and even if they're doing the wrong thing he will still give them chances again and again, so he is very gracious with people. Whereas sometimes I'm like 'see ya later mate' and he's great with people and that's something I'm always learning from him.

What is one of your happiest memories together?A: Oooh there’s so many J: Happiest memories? Definitely kids would be up there…the making of, that is definitely a highlight hahaha. A: Bahahha J: Yeah so having kids, when they’re younger and older it’s definitely a highlight, what would it be for you? A: Yep, umm having kids, travelling, we love travelling so I think every one of our overseas holidays has been awesome. J: Yep...what was the question again? A: Happiest memories. J: Well yeah, so like adventure...one thing I think we’ve always wanted in our lives is to have lots of fun and go on adventures for God. So like, travelling a lot, moving to Melbourne then moving to Bangkok and following what God’s wanted us to do. I think it's all been a happy adventure and memories. Yeah.

What is one of the hardest things about being married?

A:

I think one of the hardest things about being married is you're constantly, like you're constantly learning how to… like…be together. It’s not like after 3 years everything is great and you know everything about one another. It’s like you’re constantly growing and constantly learning so always working out how to communicate, working out how to treat each other the best, it’s just a constant thing, what do you think?

J:

Yeah, umm I think giving up your own, what’s the word for it? Umm not always thinking about yourself is definitely a very big challenge, because I think default you always go to ‘what’s best for me?’ but in marriage it won’t last if you can’t come back to what’s going to work for them, and what’s best for them. And that’s changing season by season as well. Like I think being married for 13 years we’ve changed, we grow and so our relationship has to evolve with us growing as well, if that makes sense?

What’s the best thing about being married?

J:

Definitely the sex.

A:

Haha of course.

J:

It’s just better, it’s the best..this isn’t going in there is it?

A:

You’re so cheeky!

J:

Ok I’ll do another one..

A:

I think the best thing is just that we have so much fun together. Like we are just best friends and really love spending time with one another so it’s not like you want to be apart all the time, you’re together all the time but you still love it.

J:

Umm, other than the sex, uummm.

A

: Sorry guys he’ll be back with us in a minute hahaha.

J:

My mind is in other places hahaha. What were we talking about? Ummm I think the best thing is fulfilling like … I know it’s ‘Spiro’ but fulfilling the call of God together and enjoying it while we do it, enjoying the journey and having fun along the way. But having purpose in it, not just for enjoyment like ‘Oh we’re just happy doing our own thing’ but we’re doing it with purpose, yeah.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

A:

Holidays! Travelling the world.

J:

Another kid!

A:

NO!!!

J:

Hahaha

A:

Never, never never! Unless it’s a grand kid. But there will never be another child.

J:

Travelling the world is definitely up there..do you mean as a family or in marriage?

Either/Both:

J:

Seeing the kids grow up, and seeing even Jackson get older and stuff, and becoming not just parents but great friends with the kids is something I look forward to. Yeah. Oh and Ruby never getting married as well.

A:

Oooohhhh mean dad!

J:

Is that cruel? Haha.

A:

That is so cruel!

Do you know your partners love languages?

J:

Amanda’s is physical touch, right up there! Haha jokes. Amanda’s would be quality time definitely up there, and I would say gifts.

A:

*looks weirdly at Jesse and laughs*

J:

No?

A:

Quality time is definitely right 100%

J:

Look I forgot them, that was the only other one I could remember hahaha.

A:

I like gifts but everyone likes gifts, I’m not someone who needs gifts you know that.

J:

Alright alright what are mine?

A:

Physical touch, words of affirmation.

J:

I would replace physical touch that’s a bit extreme.

A:

Yeah that is extreme haha. No actually I really love gifts. Gifts is my number 1.

J:

It is not! Haha

A:

I just want to make sure that I still get gifts from people.

J:

Haha yeah I know what you're doing.

What is your partners favourite food?

A:

It depends on the day because we have so many favourite foods..

J:

Number 1 I would say for Amanda would be Vietnamese Vermicelli - Vegetarian with the spring roll things.

A:

Yes! From Vietnam town Bridge Road Richmond 3121. Jesse’s would be…Thai, Italian, pizza, chicken and rice, Khao Niew Mamuang (mango and sticky rice), dried plums, dried mango's, a good steak, roast. He really doesn’t have an ‘ultimate’ it literally changes they’re just all his favourites.

J:

Gun to my head I would say Italian. Really good Italian not made by Aussies. Cheese, salami, like a full on meal with salads, bread with olive oil and balsamic, cheese platter..that’s ultimate!!

Question from Steve & Candace: What do you love most about your partner?

J:

Oooohhh I can’t talk about sex can I? That’s bad haha

A:

Oh man..

J:

That was a joke guys, that was a joke.

A:

Babe everything is being recorded! Everything is going in!

J:

Well what do you think babe, there must be hundreds of things?

A:

Haha ummmm. What do I love the most about you?

J:

My humour? My good looks?

A:

Your good looks for sure. Good looks, smile, then your humour but not including NOT including the dad jokes that have been creeping in.

J:

Hahaha that is true. So what do I love….

A:

You can’t just say body parts.

J:

What? What are you saying?

A:

Like you can’t just say.. hahaha

J

: I don’t want this to be a rude interview. Hahaha

A:

I know what he wants to say..

J:

What? What are you talking about?

A:

Nothing.

J:

Oh my goodness, your eyes!

A:

Hahaha.

J:

Hahaha definitely. Next.

Question for the next couple:

A:

Got it!

J:

Wow..

A:

If you had to choose between having pineapples for hands or only eating pineapples for the rest of your life what would you choose?

J:

It’s a great question.

A

: It’s a great question, we have been asking it for about 10 years and we still don’t know what we would choose!
